.                                                                       Low Current Powering Considerations

There are two sources of 13.8 VDC power to the Delta / Rangr.  The first is the high current source required to power the transmitter PA stage up to 110 watts output.  The second is the low current source required by the receiver and other common electronics.

In this conversion, you have the option of  bringing the low current power lead by itself up to the control head where it will be fused and switched somehow, probably by a SPST switch on the volume control, provided it can handle 5 amps of current.  Another, more elegant option would be using a new relay in the Delta / Rangr itself to switch the low current power source on under the control of one of the leads in the connectorized cable.

Using a lead in the connectorized cable to drive a relay facilitates the complete removal of the control head when not in use.  This also makes it impossible for the radio to remain on when the control head has been removed.

Note: These radios draw considerable current on receive and can easily render a car - whose battery is not charging - incapable of starting in short order.

You may refer to the attached sketch if you decide to use a remote power relay.  Fuse it properly within the radio and to use a transient suppressing diode.  The relay may be epoxied in the rear of the radio.

The M/P controls TRANSMITTING and receiving on many frequencies, suitable for a wide range of HF, VHF and UHF needs. In the USA, TRANSMIT operation requires a license issued by the FCC  for the class of operation intended.  Amateur radio licensees must maintain strict control over their equipment, preventing unlicensed operation within or outside of the amateur bands.
